  • Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Admission 2025
    Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University was founded in 1918 and it is based in Tbilisi in Georgia. It is the oldest university in the Caucasus region as well as Georgia. Ivane Javakhishvili was the main founder of the university and he was a Georgian historian and academist.

    Early 19th Century

      • The idea of establishing a university in Georgia arose alongside the national liberation movement against the Russian Empire.
         

    1860s – Spiritual Revival and Educational Aspirations

      • A new generation of intellectuals, led by Ilia Chavchavadze, began actively advocating for a national university to revive Georgian culture and education.
         

    Noble Local Bank Established in Tbilisi
     

      • Provided financial resources for cultural and educational development — the only bank in the Russian Empire to do so.
         

    Early 20th Century – Leadership of Ivane Javakhishvili
     

      • A graduate and associate professor of St. Petersburg University, Ivane Javakhishvili took charge of planning the university’s creation.
         

    May 12, 1917 – Founding of “Georgian Free University” Society
     

      • Held in Petre Melikishvili’s apartment in Tbilisi; chaired by Ekvtime Takaishvili.
         
      • This society played a key role in preparing for the university’s launch.
         

    Fall 1917 – Final Planning Phase
     

      • Decided to open the university with one faculty: Faculty of Philosophy, encompassing humanities, natural sciences, and mathematics.
         

    December 1917 – First Admission Announcement
     

      • The public was notified via press regarding student admissions to the Georgian University.
         

    January 26 (February 8 NS), 1918 – University Inauguration
     

      • The first national university in the Caucasus opened on David the Builder’s Day.
         
      • Petre Melikishvili became the first rector.
         
      • Ivane Javakhishvili led the Faculty of Philology.
         

    Notable First Professors and Lecturers
     

      • Included prominent figures like Ivane Javakhishvili, Ekvtime Takaishvili, Akaki Shanidze, Dimitri Uznadze, Grigol Tsereteli, among others.
         

    1989 – Renamed in Honor of Its Founder
     

    The university was officially renamed Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU).
