Georgia's Akaki Tsereteli State University, established in 1933, is one of the state's oldest educational institutions, with a well-developed infrastructure. ATSU's study methodology is carried out on all levels: The Ministry of Georgian Education and Science accredits bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The University now boasts roughly 10,000 students in nine faculties as a result of the renovations' success.

- 1930 – Established as State Pedagogical Institute in Tbilisi after TSU was divided.
- 1933 – Relocated to Kutaisi; renamed Alexander Tsulukidze State Pedagogical Institute.
- 1952 – Subtropical agriculture institution opened in Kutaisi.
- 1959 – Moved to Sokhumi; became the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture of Georgia.
- 1973 – Kutaisi Polytechnic Institute granted official status.
- 1974 – Official opening of Polytechnic Institute.
- 1977 – Named Niko Muskhelishvili Polytechnic Institute.
- 1990 – Upgraded to Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State University.
- 1992 – Polytechnic Institute received university status.
- 1990s – Subtropical Agriculture Institute relocated to Kutaisi due to conflict in Abkhazia.
- 2006 – Merged with Niko Muskhelishvili Technical University; renamed Akaki Tsereteli State University.
- 2010 – Subtropical Agriculture University officially merged into ATSU.
