In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 of the Andhra Pradesh Government Medical and Dental Instituion converting them into Semi-Autonomous Institution under the Act No.31 of 2007, published in Andhra Pradesh Gazette vide reference No.26 January 23,2008. The Government have issued orders for construction of new Medical College and Hospital viz.,Rajiv Gandhi Insttue of Medical Sciences (RIMS).Ongole with an estimated cost of Rs.25 crores Sanctioned in G.O.Ms.No.210 HM&FW (E1)Dept., Dated 27-05-2007. G.O.Ms.No.210 HM&FW (E1)Dept., Dated 27-05-2007.accorded administrative sanction for Rs.125 crores for construction of new Medical College and Hospital at Ongole, Prakasam District viz.,Rajiv Gandhi Insttue of Medical Sciences (RIMS).Ongole The District Collector & Magistrate has identified and handed over the site to an extent of 37.46 acres in survey No.68 of Pelluru Village,Ongole Mandal pertaining to Nagarjuna Sagar Project in which Staff Quarters & Offices of Irrigation Departments were existing. The foundation stone was laid down on 01-07-2007 by the Hon'ble Chief Minister Late Dr.Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy garu. The APHMIDC., Govrnment of Andhra Pradesh have under taken the construction of RIMS.,Ongole and entrusted the construction work to M/s LANCO Infrastructure, Hyderabad vide Letter no.216/APHMHIDM/DEE-2/AEE-3/2007-08/5863;5864 and 5865 Dated 26-12-2007. The erstwhile District Headquarters Hospital, Ongole with 200 beds was taken over under the administrative control of Director,RIMS, Ongole from 01-10-2008 and shifted to New RIMS premises at Bhagya nagar with 300 beds..

Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences(RIMS) Ongole was planned to start by section 38 of the Government of Andhra Pradesh Medical and Dental, converting them into Semi-Autonomous Institution. RIMS Ongole was placed under the Act No.31 and has permitted to Sanctioned for the construction of new Government Medical College and Hospital in Ongole with an estimated cost of Rs.25 crores. Further the ordered sanction for Rs.125 crores for construction of new Medical College and Hospital at Ongole, Prakasam District. RIMS Ongole was recoganized by MCI and affiliated with NTR University. It has been providing 100 MBBS seats annual intake, and from 2019 this is increased as 120 seats under EWS Quota.

Hostel Fees
Rajiv Gandhi Government Medical college’s eperate Hostel and residential complex for boys and Girls was built in more than 1,20,000 sq.mt within the college campus. Boys & Girls Hostel has each 126 rooms with a comfortable bedding arrangement, good water facilities, and toilet facilities. Each Hostels block have good Canteen facilities with hygienic foods and comfortable dining rooms.
There is a separated PG hostel and Interns Hostel are available with 160 rooms and separated Nurses hostel is available with 36 rooms. This campus also has teaching and non-teaching staff residential facilities. Separated Air-conditioned visitor rooms and air-conditioned study rooms with computer and internet facilities are available.
